The Health Benefits of Natural Mineral Water

Our exceptionally pure, naturally chalk-filtered Natural Mineral Water – with a pH-neutral value of 7.5 – is enriched with minerals from deep within the South Downs. Our water’s composition is consistent and remains untouched from source to bottle (or can!), except for in some cases, when we add carbon dioxide to make it sparkle.

The naturally occurring dissolved minerals in our water have a wide range of benefits for overall health and well-being, from aiding digestion to lowering blood pressure.

Here’s how:

Calcium

Calcium has several important functions in the body. Most of us know that it helps to build strong bones and keep our teeth healthy, but it also plays a key role in regulating muscle contractions – including our heartbeat – and in helping our blood to clot effectively.

Magnesium

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of essential chemical reactions within the body. It’s a component of enzymes that help turn the food we eat into nutrients that we can absorb and it helps convert glucose into energy. It ensures our parathyroid glands – which are crucial for bone health – work normally. Muscles need magnesium to contract and nerves need it to send and receive messages. It has even been shown to improve mood!

Potassium

Potassium’s most important role is to help control the balance of fluids in the cells within our body. It also helps the heart muscle to work properly and supports healthy blood pressure and nerve function.

Sodium

Sodium plays a similar role to potassium by maintaining normal fluid levels outside of cells in the body. However, it’s only needed in small amounts. (The NHS recommends that we have no more than 2.4g of sodium a day.) Our water is naturally low in Sodium.

Chloride

Chloride interacts with sodium and potassium to help regulate the volume of water in the body. It is also an essential component of stomach acid – so crucial for helping the body digest food.

Hydrogen carbonate

Hydrogen carbonate, or bicarbonate, is an electrolyte that plays a key role in regulating the body’s PH levels. Its alkaline properties keep the body’s acid-base balance stable.

Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral found in our bones and teeth, which helps to keep them strong. It’s naturally occurring in most sources of water.

Nitrate

Naturally occurring nitrates are converted into nitric oxide by the body. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator: it dilates blood vessels. This improves circulation and helps to lower blood pressure. It may even improve athletic performance!

Sulphate

Sulphate is essential for numerous biological processes. Notably, it aids detoxification by conjugating with foreign substances, like drugs and toxins, and internal compounds, such as hormones or neurotransmitters, so they can be safely eliminated from the body.

So, rest assured: not only does South Downs Water taste delicious and quench your thirst, it’s actually good for you too.
