South Downs Water Partners with Newbury Racecourse

South Downs Water is proud to announce a new partnership with Newbury Racecourse, bringing our premium Natural Mineral Water to one of Britain’s most respected and historic sporting venues.

The partnership unites two organisations with strong roots in the English countryside. On one side is South Downs Water, drawn from an artesian well 420 feet beneath the South Downs and naturally filtered through ancient chalk layers to create a pure, mineral-rich water. On the other is Newbury Racecourse, one of the UK’s most celebrated racecourses and a cornerstone of British horse racing for more than a century.

In an era where consumers increasingly value local sourcing, sustainability and authenticity, this partnership represents a natural fit.

South Downs Water is sourced, bottled and canned in England at the foot of the South Downs, with sustainability at the heart of its operation. The water is naturally high in calcium, low in sodium and bottled at source, reducing transportation requirements while maintaining exceptional quality. The company’s commitment to recyclable packaging and championing local aligns closely with the values of Newbury Racecourse who aspire to reduce their environmental impact.

For visitors to Newbury Racecourse, the partnership means enjoying a premium English Natural Mineral Water while attending one of England’s most iconic racing destinations – it’s a celebration of home-grown quality.

The Story Behind Newbury Racecourse

Although racing at Newbury Racecourse can be traced back to 1805, the modern racecourse owes its existence to legendary trainer John Porter. Following a chance encounter with King Edward VII in the early 1900s, Porter gained royal support for his vision of creating a racecourse in Newbury. Construction began in 1904, and the racecourse officially opened in September 1905.

One of Newbury’s most distinctive features opened on the very same day as the racecourse’s first ever meeting: its own railway station. The dedicated station helped bring thousands to enjoy all that Newbury Racecourse has to offer.

Among the racecourse’s many milestones:

  • The first race held at Newbury Racecourse took place on 26 September 1905, with Copper King winning the Whatcombe Handicap.
  • Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed her first winner at Newbury in 1958 when Doutelle won the John Porter Stakes.
  • The Lockinge Stakes has become one of Britain’s premier flat races and remains a highlight of the racing calendar.
  • The racecourse is also home to the prestigious Coral Gold Cup, one of the most important jumps races in the UK.

Today, Newbury Racecourse is far more than a sporting venue. Alongside world-class racing, the site hosts conferences, music, events, hospitality experiences and year-round entertainment.

Bringing Premium Hydration to Racegoers

Through this partnership, South Downs Water will supply its Premium Natural Mineral Water across the racecourse, ensuring racegoers, hospitality guests and event attendees can enjoy refreshment sourced from one of England’s most beautiful landscapes.

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to quality, sustainability and delivering exceptional visitor experiences. It also highlights the growing demand for locally sourced British products within hospitality and sporting environments.
