Helping to bring hope, life, colour and fun to vulnerable children

With the help of all our customers and clients, South Downs Water is supporting Children on the Edge, helping to bring hope, life, colour and fun to vulnerable children around the world. In August we donated £150 to Children on the Edge, helping one of their projects in Uganda. Here’s how our support is bringing lasting change:

Unemployment, poverty and little access to education had left the Loco slum community in Jinja, Uganda extremely vulnerable. Children were exposed to malnutrition, exploitation, neglect and physical abuse. In the last 18 months Children on the Edge have opened a nursery school for the youngest children, and equipped local community leaders to form a Child Protection Team.

The leader of the Child Protection team describes the changes they have seen as a result:

“People are taking part in community workshops, they see a local team that can deal with their problems, they see a drop in domestic violence and crime and their children on a playscheme and a new school being built. It gives them hope. Hope is knowing things can change”

The new nursery and primary school now provides education for 60 children, including four year old Namakula. Namakula had her first day at school a year ago. She is from one of the poorest families in Loco slum, and in her first few months at school, she could not speak.

At first, the teachers relied entirely on hand signals to communicate with Namakula. They worked closely with her, using play and creativity to build her confidence and sense of safety. By the second term she was one of the best pupils in her writing, enjoyed singing and found a best friend to play with.

Fundraising Manager, Eloise Armstrong, writes:

“Thank you to South Downs Water and all your customers – you’re helping restore the full ingredients of a childhood to children like Namakula.
It costs only £156 each year to help educate a child in our nursery school in Loco – and you’re support is helping us continue to extend our support to the families and children that need it the most”
